SANDSTONE-THE ESSENCE OF TRADITIONAL AND MODERN INTERIOR DESIGNS BY BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP

Sandstone - The Essence of traditional and Modern Interior Designs

home is not just a concrete structure made of bricks and mortar. It is more than a set of rooms, bathroom, kitchen, patio, entryways, and garden. The presence of family members makes a particular space ideal for living in. From walls to floors and from roof to outdoor space, everything matters the most. Your home is the symbol of your status. Hence, making an eye-catching and durable living room is more worthy than an expensive concrete structure. It is possible with natural stones that add sophistication and durability to homes.

“The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live. It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, civilized, meaningful environment, not about fashion or what’s in or what’s out. This is not an easy job.” – Albert Hadley, one of most influential interior decorators and designers

In contemporary and traditional-styled living rooms, natural stones, like marble, granite, slate, limestone, quartzite, and sandstone, are widely used. Every natural stone product has a specific utility to render a new meaning to the architectural excellence. Here, putting natural stones in the right places (walls, floors, countertops, and backsplashes) matters the most. It guides in upgrading a living room with the help of a certified and professional natural stone company.

Choosing The Best Natural Stone For Your New Home
This week, we are going to rewind back to our blog posts about choosing the best natural stone for different aspects of your home. This week, we are talking about choosing the best natural stone for your new home. Natural stone can offer beauty and uniqueness to your new home.

Here is a list of the best natural stones for your new home:

Factors in choosing the right stone for your new home:

Color

Natural stone comes in a beautiful array of colors. Granite and marble can range from soft beiges and pinks, to classic blacks and whites, to rich reds, greens, and multi-colors. The varied appearance of natural stone gives it wonderful character and creates a one-of-a-kind effect anywhere it is used.

Finish

There is a wide variety of finishes for natural stone and there are constantly new finished appearing in the market. Examples of finishes include: polished, honed, leathered, brushed, and antiqued. Ask your designer about the pros and cons of the different finishes for your project.

Usage

The harder the natural stone is, the more it resists abrasion. Granite is typically the hardest of all the stone types. If you decide to use a softer stone, you, as the homeowner, will have to use gentler cleansers and dust more frequently to prevent scratches.

Natural stone options for your new home:

Marble

This natural stone adds a sophisticated addition to your home. Its appearance and ease of maintenance make it a popular choice for countertops, floors, foyers, fireplaces, and showers. Another option for homeowners that love marble is using serpentine for kitchen counters. It is often called the “green” marble. It’s not a true marble, but does offer a marble-like look.

Granite

Granite is available in a striking array of colors and its durability makes it ideal for kitchen countertops and heavily-used surfaces including tables and floors. Granite offers an impenetrable surface and it is typically not affected by citric acid, coffee, tea, alcohol, or wine. It is nearly impossible to scratch and with proper cleaning will not stain under normal use.

Travertine

Travertine is a type of limestone and one of the most popular natural stones for interior and exterior use. This natural stone is durable, low-maintenance, inexpensive, environmentally-friendly and has a near endless supply of colors and tones to choose from.

Limestone

This stone is widely used as a building stone. Popular uses include countertops, flooring, interior and exterior wall cladding, and exterior paving. Limestone is an extremely versatile material. It can be shaped to make decorative elements to be placed within in your home. Since it is a plentiful material, limestone is a relatively inexpensive material.

Soapstone

Soapstone is growing in popularity and its popular uses include kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, fireplace, and stair treads. Its heat resistance and ability to stay clean make it widely popular in the kitchen. The stone itself can cost you a pretty penny, but it is so easy to install that you can do it yourself.

Sandstone

This natural stone is frequently used for fireplace facings, chimneys, patio benches and poolside. Sandstone is a porous material so if you are going to use it in your kitchen you must properly seal it.

Slate

Slate is a popular flooring material as well as kitchen countertops, fireplace facings, and tabletops. It has care-free maintenance since it is a non-porous material that absorbs little to no contaminants or moisture and requires little to no cleaning. It is a more expensive material upfront, but can add value to your home in the long run.

COMPARING NATURAL STONE BY BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP

There are a lot of similarities between natural stone tiles and the various natural stone materials that are available. They are both hard-surface flooring options that are highly durable and water-resistant and can last for many years in numerous environments. The key difference is in the melted glass glaze that can be applied to ceramics to protect them from damage and stains. Ceramic tile also can be manufactured to mimic the look of other materials, such as wood, glass, metal, and, yes, natural stone.

Natural Stone Tile
Mountain-born stone comprises a variety of specific materials, each of which has unique properties and characteristics.

Granite
The hardest and densest construction-grade stone material, granite can be polished smooth, honed flat, or left in a naturally gauged state. While it is resistant to stains and water penetration, it is somewhat porous and should be sealed after installation, to protect both the tiles and the grout lines
between them.

Slate
Almost as hard as granite, slate is a striated material that consists of layers of flat, hard-packed stone that are compressed by the weight of the earth into solid pieces. This gives the material a very strong structure, making it resistant to cracks and breaks. However, it is prone to some chipping on tile edges. Naturally porous, like all stones, slate should be chemically sealed after installation, with periodic reapplication recommended for best effect.

Limestone
Limestone offers moderate density and strength and is porous (must be sealed). It tends to weather well, taking on an aged, antique look over time, reminiscent of classical stone structures.

Sandstone

An extremely porous material, sandstone needs to be treated with multiple applications of a quality penetrating sealer and a surface sealer on a regular basis. Sandstone is generally not recommended in bathrooms and other humid or wet environments

Expert Design Notes: How to Use Marble in the Bathroom

NOVEMBER 20, 2018
If there’s one material that instantly elevates a bathroom from functional to luxurious, it’s marble. This polished stone has been used in bathrooms for many years because it’s both sturdy and beautiful. Plus, there’s a marble color and style for everyone. The following design tips will help you understand the most popular types of marble — and how to incorporate them into your bathroom.

Options for a Marble Bathroom

Using Marble in the Bathroom

Marble can be the primary design element in a bathroom. This is the case in a New York apartment showcased by Architectural Digest’s Allix Cott. The bathroom features marble across the walls, floor, countertop and backsplash. Chrome fixtures and black elements add a sophisticated touch.

Singapore Home Decor writer Domenica Tan shows how marble floors and walls can be paired with a glass shower to add space to a bathroom. When the marble used on a shower wall and floor isn’t obstructed by a shower curtain or opaque shower doors, light has more surface area to bounce around on. This makes the space brighter and more inviting.

See too how marble can be used uniquely in the shower by considering a project by Salt Design Co. Led by interior designer Sarah Brady, this custom shower installation uses small gold-flecked tiles to create a fish scale-inspired pattern. There’s also a horizontal built-in shelf that provides accessible storage while adding an interesting design element to the space.

The durable and resilient qualities of marble make it a great choice for bathroom flooring, too, Ozge Tirpan at marble supplier Sefa Stone notes. Marble floors are resistant to water damage and so will look new for a long time. Since each marble stone is unique, marble flooring can make a bathroom look more authentic as well. And, different cuts of marble can be assorted and mix-matched on the floor for a truly custom look.

Enjoying the long-lasting beauty of marble will require maintenance, however. Bernard Fournier says that marble must be sealed in order to maintain its appearance. Sealing marble with a slip-resistant finish can also make it safer, since it is normally quite slippery when wet.

Marble Countertops and Sinks

Pairing Marble with Wood and Metal

Decorating an entire bathroom in marble can sometimes feel too stark and cold. Fortunately, marble plays well when balanced with warmer, natural materials like wood. A bathroom showcased by interior designer Kylie Mawdsley shows how a marble, cool gray paint and a medium tone wood vanity work together in harmony. The wood in this bathroom also helps adds a homey and cozy touch to the cooler elements in the space.

Wood and marble also create a compelling contrast that’s equal parts elegant and rustic, sophisticated and approachable. According to La Maison Jolie founder Rani Engineer, marble inlaid in wood is a popular trend that many bathroom and kitchen designers are experimenting with.

White carrara marble is especially common in interior designs, she adds. This is because carrara often has silver and gold veining (the naturally-occurring color deposits in the stone), which compliments metal fixtures in the bathroom.

Aside from wood, the most popular marble pairing materials today include brick and metal, according to Mar Esteve Cortés at The Size, a surfacing material distributor. While silver metals exude a cooler feel, gold metals give a cozy and inviting to the space. The most popular trending combination for bathrooms is marble and copper.

Bronze is often paired with marble for a modern, sophisticated look. A freestanding tub is paired with bronze and marble, writer Warren Singh-Bartlett at Wallpaper notes. The white and gray marble flooring in this luxury hotel bathroom in Kuwait is complemented with contemporary mashrabiya screens, which provide a delicate privacy wall around the bathtub.

When tiles need to be repaired, grout can be a creative method, adding a decorative metallic touch. Metallic grout creates a wow effect, interior designer Anna Lysik explains. It echoes the streaks and lines that are naturally occuring in marble. When installing new marble tiles, metallic grout can be used instead of black or white grout as well

NATURAL STONE BY BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP

As you shop for natural stone tiles, these are a number of general factors that you should consider.
Absorption Rating
The absorption rating refers to how porous a given material is. The more absorbent it is, the more susceptible the stone will be to stain. Absorbent stone can also be prone to cracking damage if it is subjected to freezing conditions. Natural stones vary greatly in their absorption rates, with sandstone being the most porous and granite the most impervious to water absorption. Absorption rates are classified according to the following terms:
Non-vitreous: This is the highest absorption level. In most cases, non-vitreous tiles should not be used in any damp environment.
Semi-vitreous: While these tiles are less absorbent, the more liquid they are exposed to, the more maintenance they will require.
Vitreous: This is the standard absorption level for flooring tiles and these materials are generally considered appropriate for most low- to mid-traffic indoor and outdoor applications.
Impervious: These materials are resistant to the absorption of liquids and thus will be easier to maintain. They are often used in high-traffic commercial applications.
In general, sandstone is the most porous natural stone material. Travertine, limestone, and slate have medium absorbency, while granite is relatively waterproof. Polished materials also absorb less water than honed or cleft surfaces.
Grade
Some retailers use a grading system to rate the quality of materials. This can refer to the size, shape, and thickness of the tile, as well as the condition of its surface. Most grading systems have three levels of quality:
Grade 1 refers to high-quality, uniform materials.
Grade 2 consists of materials with minor defects, such as chips, scratches, or irregular surfaces.
Grade 3 materials have major flaws in size, shape, surface, or chipping, making them appropriate only as accent pieces, or in certain rustic decorative applications.
Coefficient of Friction
This measures how slippery various materials are. The higher the coefficient, the more traction a tile will have. This number is especially important in moist environments such as bathrooms and kitchens, as well as high-traffic commercial areas. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that flooring material has a minimum of a .6 dryness coefficient.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Rating
Some natural stone flooring materials are more suited to outdoor applications than others. Many of the factors above will determine whether a material should be used in an open-air environment.
Warning
Non-vitreous materials will be subject to staining through dirt and acid rain, as well as cracking when absorbed materials freeze and expand. Stones that have a low coefficient of friction will also pose a slipping hazard during rain and snowstorms.
Oxidation
Natural stone materials are formed beneath the earth over millions of years, and often contain a variety of disparate elements. Sometimes iron is present in these materials, which can manifest as bright red and amber hues in the surface of the stone. The problem in an outdoor environment is that those traces of iron can oxidize, a process more commonly known as rusting. This can cause the entire tile to degenerate over time.
Benefits of Using Natural Stone Flooring
There are many aesthetic and practical reasons why natural stone flooring can be a good choice:
Each piece of stone is a unique creation of the earth, making every flooring application one of a kind. Every floor is entirely unique.
The mountain-born qualities of the stone can help to give living spaces a direct and eternal connection to the natural world, unlike any other building material.

Stone tiles are natural, nonpolluting, eco-friendly pieces. Purchasing stones which were acquired locally can cut down on the environmental impact of transport

Flooring

Flooring

Comparing Natural

While it is resistant to stains and water penetration, it is somewhat porous and should be sealed after installation, to protect both the tiles and the grout lines between them.

ITALIAN MARBLE BY BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP

Italian marble is one of the oldest and most functional decorative materials in the World. Marble has been quarried in Italy and many other European countries for centuries. Traditionally, people used marble as a building block and tombstone in ancient Rome and Asia Minor. Due to proximity of old quarries like White Carrara and Afyon White (two of the oldest quarries in the World); buildings in surrounding areas use marble blocks to dress and construct various buildings. Eventually, Romans were able to cut marble blocks thinner to use in marble flooring and marble countertops.
How Marble cutting technology evolved?
Late 18th century marble cutting technology improved and marble became more of a decorative interior element in various forms. Thin cutting technology with diamond tools improved the process and ¾” thick marble slabs were sawn. Various diamond tools were also used in polishing the surface and give it a smooth finish.
Most popular Marbles in the world
Calacatta Arabescato Marble
Today some of the most popular marbles are Italian White Carrara, Italian Calacatta, Spanish Crema Marfil and Turkish Afyon white. These marbles are also known by variety of names in Italian and other languages.  For example, White Carrara is also known as Bianco Carrara and so on.  In addition, each marble quarry produces different styles of marble distinguished by its veins, background color, and markings.  All of these unique attributes make each slab of marble a unique piece of stone.
Interesting facts about Italian Marble
Marble, like all-natural materials vary from shipment to shipment and from block to block. Different quarries produce more or less desirable look and veins from time to time. Carrara region of Italy is particularly rich in beautiful marble quarries. White Carrara, Statuario, Statuario Classic, Calacatta Gold, Calacatta Arabescato, Calacatta Caldia, Vagli Oro, and Zebrino are some of the most desired stones in the World.
Bhandari Marble Group
Similarly, Turkish region of Afyon produce some of the best translucent marbles in the World.  Marbles from this area have a translucent look and it is often compared to Onyx stones.  Afyon white, Afyon Gray, Allure, Tundra gray, Silver Shadow are highly desired stones.   One also has to Drama area of Greece for Marble.  Drama area is also very rich in marble production.  Snow white marble, Dolomite marbles, and Volakas are some of the well-known materials.  Marbles from this area is a little softer but has dramatic look and feel.
Thinner and better Marbles
Marble tiles or thin tiles became available in late 80’s and it is one of the most popular forms and shapes of natural stone.   They usually come 3/8” thick and thin form makes it easy to transport and install.  Marble tiles are a fantastic way of decorating kitchen floors, kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, and bathroom floors. Marble floor tiles are easy to install and last forever.  Unlike other forms of material, marble tiles can be re-polished over time. Most popular sizes are 12×12 tiles, 18×18 tiles and 12×24 wall and floor tile.  A good sealer is always recommended to seal marble tiles after installation.
Usage of Italian Marble
Kitchen backsplashes use a combination of small size marble tiles or mosaics.  3×6 subway tile can be installed in a straight joint or staggered joint. Water-jet cut marble tiles also add an element of dimension to any kitchen installation. You can use several colors mixed or solid to achieve a highly decorative element in your kitchen.
The effects of Marble on temperature
One of the less well-known qualities of marble is, its ability to keep indoor temperatures cool. In general marble is lower than room temperature and keeps cool. This particular quality is important in warm areas since it reflects sun and keeps the room cool.  Builders in Resort areas like Miami and the Caribbean Islands tile the entire floor with marble. Large format tiles like 24×24 or 36×36 marble tiles are used on the entire floor to give a rich look.
Marble as mosaic tiles
Marble mosaics are another popular form of this material.  Mosaic art has been around for centuries. It was mostly hand clipped with artisans and laid on cement beds. Today modern technology enables us to cut marble mosaics almost into any shape and size.  They are usually mounted on mesh or plastic net for ease of installation.  One of the most practical applications of mosaic tiles is shower floors.  Especially with small format marble mosaics like 1×1 you can create a slope inside showers.  Furthermore, grout joints in these mosaics create a natural non-slip surface.
Marble Slabs
Marble Slabs is the most challenging shape of marble. Best marble slabs come in smaller sizes and shapes. In order to get the best marble slab for marble countertops, you have to look for a slab that has good color distribution, free
of cracks and has a good contrast between the background and veins.   A typical marble slab is 8 ft by 4 ft and you can easily get two pieces of countertops from it. Most popular surface is polished surface. However, honed marble slabs are preferred to make wear and tear less visible.   Honing marble slabs is usually done by skilled marble finishers or marble factories.
High quality sealer is a must
We recommend sealing all marble floors and countertops with a good quality sealer after installation.   There are different types of sealers such as oil based or water-based sealers as well as color enhanced or plain sealers.  Some of these sealers provide a wet look which brings out all the colors and veins in marble to the surface. One can also achieve what is called a book match veins by polishing the opposite sides of alternating tiles to give a dramatic look.

Granite is a natural stone that is quarried in many countries around the globe. Granite and Quartzite are the names that are used interchangeably wherever stone tile and slabs are sold.

True Granite is a porous, igneous rock that has any number of chemical compositions that include a quartz base.
Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that has a higher percentage of quartz in its chemical makeup than granite does.

For the record, true quartzite is harder than true granite. But, don’t get too caught up in the name of the stone because regardless of which it is, geologically speaking, it has the same purpose and durability.

White Granite is harder to find than black or brown granite. All granite gets its name from the background color.

Some white granite slabs have veins similar to marble while others may have a spattering of freckles in either brown, grey, black or red and may include a sprinkling of blue throughout.

Bhandari marble group’s classic granite products are available in all colours, all shapes and finishing. Granite for all projects and other stones are also available. We deal in Granite which includes tiles, floor designs, flooring, images, India, prices, statues, suppliers, stones etc.
Granite is a common type of felsic intrusive igneous rock that is granular and phaneritic in texture. Granites can be predominantly white, pink, or gray in color, depending on their mineralogy. The word granite comes from the Latin
granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a completely crystalline rock. Strictly speaking, granite is an igneous rock with between 20% and 60% quartz by volume, and at least 35% of the total feldspar consisting of alkali feldspar, although commonly the term granite is used to refer to a wider range of coarse-grained igneous rocks containing quartz and feldspar.

BhandariMarbleGroup

The Indian stone industry has evolved into the production and manufacturing of blocks, flooring slabs, structural slabs, monuments, tomb stones, sculptures, cobbles, pebbles and landscape garden stones.
India’s history, dating back to 3200 BC has been influenced considerably by the disposition, development and use of stones and other construction materials. Dimension stones have also left deep imprints on the architectural heritage of the country. Innumerable temples, forts and palaces of Ancient Indian Civilization have been carved out of locally available stones. The Taj Mahal at Agra was constructed from Indian marble. Some of the rock-cut structures include Khajuraho Temple, Elephanta Caves, and Konark Temple. Besides, all major archeological excavations have revealed exquisitely carved statuettes and carvings in stone. Ancient Buddhist monuments like the Sanchi Stupa of 3rd century BC have also been carved out of stone.

This tradition of Stone Architecture has continued to the present era, with most of the important modern buildings in India like the Presidential House, Parliament House, and Supreme Court made from high quality sandstone of Rajasthan. The Baha’i House of Worship of New Delhi stands testimony to the relevance of marble in modern Indian architecture.
Stones are still the mainstays of civil construction in India, with stones being used extensively in public buildings, hotels, and temples. It is increasingly being used in homes, with the use of stones now penetrating amongst the growing middle class of India.

The success of commercial stone industry solely depends upon defects in rock stone. Natural defects in ornamental commercial rock deposits adversely affect the quality of rock deposit. Detection of natural defects in decorative and dimensional stone industry play vital role in the quality assessment.

BEAUTY OF NATURAL STONE BY BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP

Natural stone refers to a variety of materials which are extracted from the earth and then processed into architectural elements. This is important because different types of stone will have different properties. Marble and onyx, for instance, are very soft, easily scratched, and can be stained by liquid agents.

If you are looking for a good low maintenance stone kitchen floor, then you should probably look at materials such as slate and granite. These are very hard stones, that can be made nearly impervious to water with a proper sealing treatment. They are also resistant to scratches and divots, although chips and cracks can appear if a heavy enough object is dropped, or if the floor is improperly installed.

MARBLE

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is exposed to high temperatures and pressures. Marble forms under such conditions because the calcite forming the limestone recrystallises forming a denser rock consisting of roughly equigranular calcite crystals. The variety of colours exhibited by marble are a consequence of minor amounts of impurities being incorporated with the calcite during metamorphism.

While marble can appear superficially similar to quartzite, a piece of marble will be able to be scratched by a metal blade, and marble will fizz on contact with dilute hydrochloric acid. Classic white marble remains the top choice for many homeowners. It’s no surprise that marble countertops are so popular—the material has been attracting fans for millennia. “It’s a natural material with great variety, depending on which species you select and how it’s cut.

What Is Natural Stone?

Natural stone, of the type that is used in homes, is 100-percent stone quarried straight from the earth, with nothing added or removed, and no color additives. Natural stone can be wholly real in shape, such as rounded river stones. Or natural stone can be carved to the desired shape, such as blocks for building, sheets for walls, or tiles for flooring.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MARBLE

Everyone knows marble looks great and is probably one of the best investments a homeowner can make, but there are many other aspects of this natural stone that are worth learning about. Marble has occupied a special place in the fields of masonry and construction for thousands of years. We’ve likely learned everything there is to learn about it, but some facts are more interesting than others. Here are five curious facts about marble and its various uses.

1. Some Marble Is Actually Limestone

The geologic process that results in marble starts off as limestone. Tectonic and volcanic activity consisting of extreme heat and pressure causes limestone to remineralize and change its molecular structure and appearance. Some exotic marble quarried in the Sinai Peninsula has a creamy yellow color with a pattern reminiscent of gold flecks. Since the geologic process in this part of the Earth’s crust was interrupted before reaching the surface, it would be more accurate to call this yellow marble limestone.

2. Some Egyptian Pyramids Were Covered in Marble

Thousands of years ago, many pyramids in Egypt used to be gleaming white. Ancient builders cut and polished massive slabs of white limestone for the larger pyramids and beige marble for the smaller ones. Marble blocks and columns used to decorate Egyptian temples, but they were later removed to build mosques during the caliphate periods. For this reason, you can find hieroglyphics on the marble panels of ancient mosques outside of Cairo.

3. Marble Has Uses Beyond Construction

Pulverized marble is used to make adhesives, paint, fine paper, and even luxury cases for the iPhone. Marble powder is sometimes added to “China clay,” the bonding material used to make pills. There’s one more pharmaceutical use of marble powder: since its minerals have properties that can reduce digestive acids, it can be found in medications such as Alka Seltzer.

4. Michelangelo Was Wrong About Marble

Renaissance artists sought to improve upon the classics, but they were astonished by the keen sense of aesthetics shown by ancient Greeks and Romans. Michelangelo thought his ancestors brilliantly chose marble for their sculptures because of the elegant look of pure white stone. What he didn’t know is that these statues were garishly painted in various colors, but the pigments eventually faded away.

MARBLE IS THE GORGEOUS..........

This is most definitely one of my most requested posts that I have been meaning to actually sit down and right for forever and a day now. So you are thinking about using marble in your kitchen? Yep, I thought super duper long and hard about it too when I was designing our kitchen. Even as professionals in the stone industry. that specializes in the fabrication and installation of stone countertops. Our start-up story is quite a lengthy one but long story short, we started our company just the us 387 years ago and it is now one of the biggest/busiest. I say that as a badge of honor. It has been the craziest, longest.

So let’s get to the cold hard truth… Is marble for everyone?
YES.

I tried and I tried and I tried to find something that compared to our Statuario marble. Mark showed me every porcelain, granite and quartz slab he could find to talk me out of marble but I saw our slabs and I fell in love with it’s natural beauty. In my opinion, you really just can’t beat the elegant, classic and timeless beauty of a beautiful piece of marble. I guess Mark kind of fell in love too because he surprised me with the most beautiful hand-crafted marble sink that our company made for our home from the same slabs as our countertops. It is probably one of my very favorite pieces of art in our home…

Whew! I think that about covers the honest to goodness truth about selecting marble for your kitchen. Now how do you care and maintain your new marble to get the MOST out of your beautiful stone.

NATURAL-STONE FINISHES: HOW ARE HONED & TEXTURED DIFFERENT?

Textured vs Honed Natural Stone San Diego, CA
When you go shopping for natural-stone tiles, slabs, or panels for your home, you’re likely to be offered various types of finished surfaces. There are various kinds of finishing styles that can be applied to natural stone, but most stores offer just a handful, which can be divided into two main categories: honed and textured. As its name suggests, a textured finish features a tactile element, while a honed finish is smooth to the touch. Both honed and textured surfaces can be glossy, but this is more often the case with the former than the latter. Modern finishing techniques can be applied to just about any stone, but some are more adequate than others in terms of form and function.

No matter what type of finish you have, you’ll need to clean it regularly with a specially formulated granite countertop cleaner like Granite Gold Daily Cleaner®. All of the products offered by Granite Gold® can be used on any type of finish as well as any type of stone, including granite, marble, slate, and travertine.

Honed Finish

When stone blocks are initially cut into slabs and tiles, their surfaces will be naturally textured. If you prefer a smooth and even look, this will require grinding and sanding, which in turn results in a honed look. You can expect some level of gloss after honing, particularly with stones such as marble, granite, and quartzite, but if the desired effect is a mirror-like surface, honing will require an extra step.

Whatever finish you have on your natural-stone countertops, here’s a video explaining the quick and easy 3-step process for caring for your stone properly:

Polished Finish

This is the look most homeowners think of when they envision marble floors and granite countertops. The polished look starts off with honing, but the sanding and grinding of the surface is augmented with a few more abrasive processes plus a lot of polishing. This finishing technique has been used for centuries. When it’s applied to white marble, the colors and veining really come out and light is reflected in a very attractive manner. Frequent sealing is a must for homeowners who want to preserve polished surfaces. If you want a polished floor, seek the help of a professional. It’s not recommended to polish stone floors yourself because it will make them very slippery.

Natural Finish

Various finishing techniques can be applied to achieve a textured surface that approximates the natural look of the stone upon being quarried. For example, the split-face method creates a slightly rough surface ideal for interior décor that favors a rustic look. Vertical panels generally look better with a natural finish. An example would be a fireplace surround or decorative entrance columns in a foyer. An advantage of natural finishing is that it tends to be more affordable.

Flamed Finish

The textures created by the split-face technique may be a little too rough for flooring and counters. A better option would be to expose the stone surface to very high temperatures, thus creating a reaction among its crystalline elements. The result is an attractive look that’s imperfect, slightly textured, and somewhat glossy. Li
mestone, marble, and granite surfaces with a flamed finish can still be buffed and polished without diminishing their traction.
